Chapter Twelve

‘I’ll pick you up at six o’clock to take you to Sarah’s paranormal evening,’ Hanni shouted over the thumping of the truck engine as Jo half-fell, half-scrambled out onto the pavement at King Street.

‘I thought you didn’t want anything to do with it?’

‘I don’t,’ Hanni said. ‘But I know you need to be there, so I will attend too, just this once. Now, I’ve got to go. I told Chloe I’d be back at the shop at lunchtime. Can you get home OK?’

‘Yes, and thanks,’ Jo said, waving. Once back at her flat, with coffee in hand and chocolate biscuits for sustenance, her first call was to Macy. She’d had a missed call from him, one from Teddy and one from the pub.

‘I’ve got to be quick,’ he said, as soon as he picked up. ‘The judge has called a short break, but apparently, I need to stay close by. How are you feeling? I left you fast asleep.’

‘I’m doing OK, thanks. The leg’s getting better. Hanni came over and made breakfast, and then she drove us over to a meeting with the Ellerman family.’ She paused to consider for a second. ‘I don’t know how much attention the police are giving them, but I am pretty sure they are the main beneficiaries from Leah’s death, so they have to be top suspects.’

‘Hang on a minute, you said Hanni drove?’

‘Well, after a fashion,’ Jo laughed. ‘But I was very grateful, and I’m even more grateful that she is coming to this horrible séance thing with me tonight.’

Macy groaned. ‘Rather you than me. Are you sure you’re OK? Do you need to get to the doctors or anything?’

‘No, I should be all right. They said I can take this dressing off in a day or two. You know, it could have been a lot worse. In fact, I’ve been wondering if it was intended to be a lot worse.’ She could hear echoey voices in the background at Macy’s end, but she followed her train of thought aloud. ‘I mean, don’t you think it’s odd that there were no witnesses to the accident? Where did this mysterious delivery driver disappear to? Was it really his fault? I’ve only got Matty Sullivan’s word for that. And what about those two people I heard arguing — a girl and a man? What happened to them? So, I’ve been thinking, what if it was deliberate?’

‘Aren’t you giving yourself delusions of grandeur?’ Macy said. ‘Why would anyone want to take you out? You keep telling me you don’t know anything.’

‘Yes, but maybe it’s something I don’t know I know,’ Jo said.

‘You’ve lost me now. Look, I’ve got to go—’

‘Wait. Any news on the Angry Cherub?’ she asked quickly, before he could ring off. There was a short silence, then Macy said, ‘I’ll be in touch.’

Jo frowned at the phone for a second after the call ended, and then, taking a deep breath, she clicked on Teddy’s number. When he didn’t pick up, she felt a guilty mixture of relief and disappointment.
